Our location guide for Sulaymaniyah provides some basic essentials for the more adventurous visitor. A simple location map is provided but also a detailed topography map that shows the location of the nearest places where you can surf, ski or mountain climb (if they are close by). Of course some of these will be at long distances from Sulaymaniyah and those far flung spots are provided on the ‘nearest’ tables.  Kurdish most popular singer and famous Peshmerga member Hama Jaza was born in 1949 in Sulaimaniya city, Iraqi Kurdistan region.
 Mr. Jaza served Kurdish culture for nearly four decades as a most prominent Kurdish singer. He got married at the age of 19 and had a family of 6 children, 2 boys and 4 girls.

 Since 1969 Jaza joined Kurdish liberation movement and spent many years in Kurdistan mountains as a Peshmerga member.
In the 1980s, he took part in the new revolution as a Peshmerga member, and he played a great role in this revolution when he recorded many national anthem and songs which encouraged Peshmerga members and ignited their enthusiasm.
 Then after Mr. Jaza along with his family moved to Europe and stayed in Denmark. When the popular Kurdish uprising against Ba’ath regime happened in 1991, he returned to Kurdistan and resided in Sulaymaniyah city.
On 26th October 2009, the Ministry of Culture from Kurdistan Regional Government gave honor prize to Hama Jaza.
After many years of struggling with disease, unfortunately he was died on 1st October 2010 at the age of 61 years.

Sulaymaniyah or SlemaniSilêmanî) is a city in Southern Kurdistan (Kurdistan of Iraq) and the capital of  Sulaymaniyah is surrounded by the Azmer Range, Goyija Range and the Qaiwan Range in the northeast, Baranan Mountain in the south and the Tasluja Hills in the west. The city has a semi-arid climate with very hot dry summers and cool wet winters. Sulaymaniyah served as the capital of the historic  principality of  from 1784 to 1850.
The modern city of Sulaymaniyah was founded on 14 November 1784 by the prince Ibrahim Pasha Baban who named it after his father Sulaiman Pasha. Because it was founded as the capital of a powerful  principality, Sulaymaniyah has developed into a large city with a population of more than 1,500,000 people. It is an important economic center for northern Iraq and has been named the cultural center for sorani-speaking continuously since 1992
